Fig Trees

Indulge in the Mediterranean charm of your own garden with our large selection of fig trees. Whether you’re a seasoned horticulturist or a budding enthusiast, cultivating a fig tree in the UK is a rewarding endeavour that brings a touch of exotic allure to your outdoor space.

Although fig trees are associated with Mediterranean countries, with the correct choice of variety and given a sunny, sheltered site, they can be grown outside throughout the UK with great success. Figs picked fresh from the garden are juicy, sweet and fragrant. They are very useful for covering large areas such as a south or south-west facing wall or fence and trained as a fan they will eventually reach 2m (6ft 6in) high and 3-3.6m (10-12ft) wide. They also make ideal container plants on a sun-drenched patio, where they will make a very attractive garden feature. Fig trees require root restriction and for ease they can be planted in a Root Control Bag.

Our fig trees are supplied in containers and are available for despatch throughout the year.

Why choose a fig tree?

Fig trees are not only visually striking with their large, lobed leaves, but they also offer a bountiful harvest of sweet, succulent fruits. Growing fig trees in the UK may seem challenging, but with the right choice of variety and care, you can enjoy fresh figs right from your garden.

Our carefully chosen selection

At Pomona Fruits, we understand the unique climate challenges faced by UK gardeners. That’s why we’ve handpicked varieties that thrive in our cooler weather:

  • Brown Turkey’: Our most popular variety, the Brown Turkey fig tree is well-suited for outdoor cultivation in cooler areas, producing large, sweet fruits with rich flavour.
  • Brunswick’: This hardy cultivar ripens earlier than Brown Turkey and is also perfect for those in particularly cool regions.
  • Chelsea’: Discovered on the banks of the River Thames, this variety boasts exceptional cold hardiness and heavy cropping.
  • Madeleine de Deux Saisons’: One of the earliest figs to ripen, this cultivar can potentially produce two outdoor crops in favourable conditions.

Overcoming common concerns

We recognise that growing fig trees may seem daunting, but we’re here to support you every step of the way:

  • Limited space: Don’t let a small garden deter you. Our Standard Fig Trees are perfect for patios and can thrive in large containers.
  • Cold sensitivity: Many of our varieties, like ‘Brown Turkey’ and ‘Chelsea’, are specifically chosen for their cold hardiness.

Expert care tips

To help your fig tree flourish:

  • Position: Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot against a south-facing wall for optimal growth.
  • Root restriction: Confine roots using a root control bag or container to promote fruit production.
  • Soil: Ensure well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging.
  • Pruning: Regular pruning encourages fruit production and maintains a manageable size.

By choosing a fig tree from Pomona Fruits, you’re not just buying a plant; you’re investing in a fruitful future. Our expert-selected varieties and comprehensive care guide ensure that you can successfully grow and enjoy delicious figs, even in the UK climate.
