Cordon Apple 'Belle de Boskoop'

Cordon Apple 'Belle de Boskoop' Code: APC085

£37.95 37.9500 In Stock New

Malus domestica 'Belle de Boskoop'

This dual-purpose dessert/culinary apple was introduced in the Netherlands in the 1850s and is very popular on the continent. It produces medium-large greenish-yellow, red-flushed fruits that are often covered in russet. When cooked it is well-flavoured, hardly needing any sugar. It will cook to a thick, golden puree but the slices will hold their shape in a continental-style apple pie or flan. Eaten fresh, the fruits are quite sharp with a very firm texture. The fruits store well, with the flavour becoming progressively sweeter during storage. The tree is vigorous and heavy cropping and does well in cold, high rainfall areas.

One of the best loved fruits, apples are probably the easiest tree fruits to grow and are very popular with gardeners. In the shops we only tend to see a handful of varieties, yet there are literally thousands of known cultivars, each having their own characteristics. We have very carefully selected what we believe to be a diverse range of varieties to suit all tastes and even the most challenging growing conditions - some are recent introductions and some are much loved gems from our heritage.  Our apple trees are grafted onto M26 semi-dwarfing rootstock, which will produce a tree that is easy to grow, easy to control and easy to pick. Cordons should be restricted to 1.8-2.4m (6-8ft) in height and can be spaced 60cm (2ft) apart. To ensure rapid establishment, cordon apple trees are supplied bare-rooted and will be 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft) high on despatch. Trees are available from late November to late April.

Don't forget to include tree stakes and ties on your order. All young fruit trees require staking and for better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).

(image for) Rootex Root Control Bag (45 Litre)
£16.95 inc. p&pRootex Root Control Bag (45 Litre)A Rootex bag will produce a tree with more fibrous roots, reduced vigour and will promote early fruiting. Rootex is a special patented copper coated fabric. When the root tip comes into contact with the copper it stops growing, the apical dominance is interrupted and new feeder (fibrous) roots develop further back towards the tree. This prevents roots from circling and enables better absorption of water and nutrients. Rootex is permeable, allowing water and nutrients to pass through it. These medium sized bags are ideal for smaller trees and figs, which benefit from root restriction. A tree grown in a Rootex bag can be transplanted to another site without damage to the root system even 10 years after it was originally planted. Width 30cm x length 30cm x depth 45cm.
