Medlar Trees

Welcome to the enchanting world of medlar trees, a delightful addition to any British garden. If you’re searching for a medlar tree for sale, you’ve come to the right place. These unique fruit trees offer not only a bountiful harvest but also aesthetic appeal throughout the seasons.

Medlars produce large white flowers in the spring followed by russety rose-hip type fruits and magnificent orange-red autumn leaf colour. The fruits should be stored for several weeks and eaten after the texture has gone soft, at which stage they develop a lovely caramel-like flavour. The fruits are excellent eaten raw with wine, port and cheese and can also be used to make an exquisite amber jelly for game and other meats. Medlar trees are hardy but will crop best if positioned in an open, sunny site. Unless otherwise stated, medlars are supplied as two year old trees and will be 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft) high on despatch (including the roots). Trees are available from late November to late April.

The medlar tree, a true gem among fruit trees, is perfect for those seeking to diversify their orchard or add an interesting focal point to their landscape. Growing a medlar tree in the UK is a rewarding experience, as these hardy trees are well-suited to our climate.

One of the most captivating features of the medlar is its seasonal transformation. In spring, your medlar fruit tree will delight you with large white flowers, creating a stunning display. As autumn approaches, the tree adorns itself with magnificent orange-red foliage, adding a burst of colour to your garden.

But the true treasure of the medlar lies in its fruit. The russet-coloured, rose-hip-like fruits develop a lovely caramel-like flavour when properly ripened. For those who appreciate fine dining, medlar fruits are excellent when paired with wine, port, and cheese, offering a sophisticated treat for your palate.

If you’re concerned about the care requirements, rest assured that medlar trees are hardy and relatively low-maintenance. They thrive best in open, sunny sites, making them an ideal choice for UK gardens.

For those with limited space, we offer the Sibley’s Patio Medlar, a compact tree perfect for container growing. This option allows even urban gardeners to enjoy the beauty and bounty of a medlar tree.

Whether you’re already an experienced fruit grower or a curious newcomer to fruit trees, the medlar offers a unique and rewarding growing experience. Its historical significance, coupled with its culinary versatility, makes it a conversation piece as well as a valuable addition to your garden.

With proper care, your medlar tree will provide years of beauty and heavy crops of delicious fruits, becoming a cherished part of your outdoor space.

Don’t forget to include tree stakes and ties on your order. All young fruit trees require staking and for better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).
