£39.95 39.9500 In Stock New

Morus Nigra 'Chelsea' (syn. 'King James I')

This very old variety (syn. 'King James I'), originates from a tree that existed in the Chelsea Physic Garden (formerly Swan Walk) during the reign of King James I. During the second world war the last remaining tree was removed to make way for an air raid shelter but cuttings were taken first, ensuring that this magnificent variety lived on for future generations. The tree crops early in its life. Plant in a sunny, well drained site with a deep loam soil. The tree is approximately 90-120cm (3-4ft) tall on despatch.

Bred in the U.K.

Pollination: Self-fertile

Available for delivery: all year.

Black mulberry trees (Morus Nigra) are grown for their ornamental value and delicious dark red, almost black fruits. The fruits are very juicy and have a very distinct sweet-sharp flavour which surpasses that of any other berry. They can be eaten fresh or used in jams. The trees are very attractive with large, heart shaped leaves. Plant in a sunny, well drained site with a deep loam soil. Black mulberry trees are supplied in pots and are approximately 90-120cm (3-4ft) tall on despatch. Trees are available late November to late April.

The allure of mulberry fruit

There are several species of mulberry, but the black mulberry produces the best-flavoured fruits. These mulberries look like large blackberries once ripe and are deliciously sweet, aromatic and tangy. As mulberry fruit is rarely found in shops, it’s well worth growing your own. Enjoyed for centuries, black mulberries are not only tasty but also packed with nutrients, including Vitamin C, Vitamin K, iron and antioxidants.

Growing your own mulberry tree allows you to enjoy these nutritious fruits straight from your gardenWhen selecting a mulberry tree for your garden, consider varieties like the Black Mulberry Tree ‘Chelsea’. This variety has an interesting history, originating from a tree in the Chelsea Physic Garden during King James I’s reign. It’s known for coming into cropping early in its life and is therefore an excellent choice for those eager to enjoy mulberries.

Planting and care

Black mulberry trees are relatively low-maintenance and are ideal for novice and experienced gardeners. They thrive in most normal garden soils and can be planted in full sun or partial shade. When planting, ensure you choose a spot with well-drained soil and enough space for the tree to grow, as black mulberry trees become quite large. Where space is limited, trees can be planted in a 95 litre Root Control Bag.

Harvesting mulberry fruit

One of the joys of growing a black mulberry tree is the bountiful harvest they provide. Mulberries turn purple-black when ripe and have a sweet, juicy flavour. Harvesting mulberries is easy - you can handpick them or, if you prefer, shake the bush and lay a sheet of tarpaulin underneath to collect the fallen fruits.

Mulberry trees: more than just fruit

While the delicious mulberry fruit is undoubtedly a major draw, these trees offer more than just a tasty harvest. Black mulberry trees can add ornamental value to your garden whilst also providing shade and a habitat for wildlife.

Black mulberry trees are an excellent addition to any garden. Whether you’re looking to enjoy the fresh mulberry fruits, plant an attractive ornamental tree or simply try something new, a black mulberry tree could be the perfect choice. With their ease of care and bountiful harvests, you’ll soon wonder why you didn’t plant one sooner.

For better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).

(image for) Rootex Root Control Bag (95 Litre)
£28.95 inc. p&pRootex Root Control Bag (95 Litre)A Rootex Bag will produce a tree with more fibrous roots, reduced vigour and will promote early fruiting. Rootex is a special patented copper coated fabric. When the root tip comes into contact with the copper it stops growing, the apical dominance is interrupted and new feeder (fibrous) roots develop further back towards the tree. This prevents roots from circling and enables better absorption of water and nutrients. Rootex is permeable, allowing water and nutrients to pass through it. A tree grown in a Rootex Bag can be transplanted to another site without damage to the root system even 10 years after it was originally planted. These large bags are ideal for large trees such as walnuts, chestnuts and mulberries. Width 45cm x length 45cm x depth 45cm. Capacity: 95 litres.Buy Now
