Filbert Tree 'Kentish Cob'

Filbert Tree 'Kentish Cob' Code: NUT004

£34.95 34.9500 In Stock New

Corylus maxima 'Kentish Cob'

The most popular filbert in the UK, grown commercially in Kent. A reliable and heavy cropper. The nuts are long and large and have an excellent flavour. Produces short yellow/green catkins.

Bred in the U.K.  RHS Award of Garden Merit

Available for delivery: late November/December - late April.

Cobnuts and filberts are both similar types of hazelnut. Easy to grow, they are both productive and ornamental and take up little room in the garden. The catkins provide some late winter cheer to the garden. Two varieties should be planted next to one another to ensure cross-pollination. The nuts are usually eaten ‘green’ in September when they are succulent with a delicate flavour. They can also be collected for winter storage and are delicious roasted. Trees are supplied bare rooted and are approximately 90-120cm (3-4ft) tall on despatch. Pot grown cobnut and filbert bushes are available for despatch throughout the year.

Why choose a cobnut tree?

Cobnuts and filberts are remarkably easy to grow and require minimal space, making them perfect for gardens of all sizes. Imagine the joy of harvesting fresh nuts from your very own tree come September, or the winter charm of catkins adorning your garden.

Our range of cobnut trees:

  • Cosford’: Renowned for its exceptionally sweet flavour and thin shells, this cobnut bush  is a favourite among nut enthusiasts.
  • Kentish Cob’: A commercial favourite, this heavy cropping filbert bush produces large, flavourful nuts.
  • Purple Filbert’: A stunning ornamental variety with striking red catkins and purple foliage, perfect for adding visual interest to your garden.
  • Red Filbert ‘Rote Zellernuss’: Combines beauty and taste with its claret red catkins and delicious red-skinned nuts.

Planting your cobnut tree

For optimal pollination and nut production, we recommend planting at least two different varieties.

To ensure the best start for your cobnut tree, we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting, as recommended by the RHS.

From garden to table

Harvest your cobnuts when the husks begin to turn yellow in late September. Alternatively, store them for winter and enjoy them roasted – a perfect accompaniment to a cosy evening by the fire.

(image for) Apple Tree 'Bloody Ploughman'
£34.95Apple Tree 'Bloody Ploughman'First recorded in 1883, there is an interesting story behind the name of this well-known Scottish apple. It originates from the Carse of Gowrie where allegedly a ploughman was shot dead by a gamekeeper for stealing apples from the Megginch Estate. When the ploughman's body was returned to his wife she found some of the stolen apples in his pockets and got rid of them on the rubbish heap. One of the seedlings that subsequently grew produced apples that were blood red in colour and the tree gave rise to the cultivar that was named after the unfortunate ploughman. The fruits are crisp and juicy and when fully ripe can darken to an almost purple colour. The flesh is often stained red which makes it a good variety for juicing and it can also be used to produce cider. It is often considered a dessert apple in Scotland, but the flavour is not particularly sweet and in England it tends to be regarded as a cooker. It makes lovely apple sauce and beautiful pink pies and crumbles. The tree is disease resistant and hardy, performing well in colder areas of the UK. Sold Out
