(image for) Filbert Tree 'Purple Filbert'

Filbert Tree 'Purple Filbert'

Filbert Tree 'Purple Filbert' Code: NUT005

£35.95 35.9500 In Stock New

Corylus maxima 'Purpurea'

A very attractive filbert producing striking long red catkins, rich purple foliage and very tasty nuts with red husks and thin shells. Grown as much for its ornamental value as for its nut production.

Available for delivery: late November/December - late April.

Cobnuts and filberts are both similar types of hazelnut. Easy to grow, they are both productive and ornamental and take up little room in the garden. The catkins provide some late winter cheer to the garden. Two varieties should be planted next to one another to ensure cross-pollination. The nuts are usually eaten ‘green’ in September when they are succulent with a delicate flavour. They can also be collected for winter storage and are delicious roasted. Trees are supplied bare rooted and are approximately 90-120cm (3-4ft) tall on despatch. Pot grown cobnut and filbert bushes are available for despatch throughout the year.

Why choose a cobnut tree?

Cobnuts and filberts are remarkably easy to grow and require minimal space, making them perfect for gardens of all sizes. Imagine the joy of harvesting fresh nuts from your very own tree come September, or the winter charm of catkins adorning your garden.

Our range of cobnut trees:

  • Cosford’: Renowned for its exceptionally sweet flavour and thin shells, this cobnut bush  is a favourite among nut enthusiasts.
  • Kentish Cob’: A commercial favourite, this heavy cropping filbert bush produces large, flavourful nuts.
  • Purple Filbert’: A stunning ornamental variety with striking red catkins and purple foliage, perfect for adding visual interest to your garden.
  • Red Filbert ‘Rote Zellernuss’: Combines beauty and taste with its claret red catkins and delicious red-skinned nuts.

Planting your cobnut tree

For optimal pollination and nut production, we recommend planting at least two different varieties.

To ensure the best start for your cobnut tree, we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting, as recommended by the RHS.

From garden to table

Harvest your cobnuts when the husks begin to turn yellow in late September. Alternatively, store them for winter and enjoy them roasted – a perfect accompaniment to a cosy evening by the fire.

Ready to embark on your nut-growing journey? Browse our selection and find the perfect cobnut or filbert bush for your garden. With Pomona Fruits, you’re not just buying a tree; you’re investing in years of nutty delight and garden beauty.
