NEW! Use this plant to bring some winter cheer to the garden! Originating from Eastern Asia, the Japanese Wineberry is grown as much for its ornamental value as it is for its edible fruits. The plant is very decorative - it has dark red stems that are covered in soft red bristles. The calyx (which surrounds the flowers) are also covered in fine red bristles and contrast beautifully against the lime-green foliage which turns almost yellow-white at the time of fruiting. The dark red canes really stand out in the winter and look particularly attractive on a frosty morning. The berries are dark red when fully ripe, juicy and sweet and have a strong raspberry flavour. They are delicious picked straight from the bush but can also be cooked and used to make jam. Plant 1.8m (6ft) apart.

Sorbus pseudohupehensis 'Pink Pagoda'

Originating from Canada, this outstanding variety is a close relative of our British native rowan. It produces large open bunches of beautiful vivid pink berries in the autumn that slowly turn pale pink and last well in to winter. The berries not only look lovely, they provide winter food for hungry birds. Clusters of creamy white flowers adorn the branches in the spring and are popular with bees. The large blue-green pinnate leaves are very attractive and turn to shades of red and orange in the autumn. Suitable for most soil types, but prefers a moist, free draining site.

Height x spread in 10 years: up to 6m (20ft) x 3m (10ft).

Very popular with children but also an excellent variety for juicing as it produces beautiful pink juice. Easy to grow, very disease resistant and suitable for cooler areas. An excellent pear often grown commercially and suitable for most locations. Raised from a cross between Doyenné du Comice and Conference, it has inherited the best attributes from both its parents. Bred in the UK by East Malling Research, this new variety was chosen to mark the 100th anniversary of the research station in 2013 and is considered to be the British strawberry of the future! Bred for the supermarkets but with the aim of putting flavour back into the berry, it has a unique combination of outstanding taste, heavy yields and good shelf life. The fruits are very juicy and the eating quality is consistently good with high sugar levels and an excellent strawberry flavour. We think that Malling Centenary also has great potential as a garden variety - Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr. was certainly impressed with the flavour when he was filmed tasting the fruit for the BBC's Great British Food Revival and the variety was shortlisted for 'Plant of the Year' at the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show.
